Another name of our country is Golden Land because gilding pagodas are presented the whole country. Every city or town or village has famous and powerful Pagodas. For Buddhist although he gets to a city but he doesn’t go to the city of scared Pagoda, it doesn’t mean he has been to that place. So when we get to Mandalay, we shouldn’t miss to go to Mahamuni Pagoda. Mahamuni Pagoda had situated in that place before Mandalay was founded. Mahamuni Buddha image was move form Rakhine State during King Bodawpaya. Buddhists believe that Mahamuni Buddha Image was casted during the Buddha life time and Buddha embraced seven times so the image is alive. Therefore every early morning the face of Mahamuni Buddha Image is washed by the Monk (Yaytaw Sayardaw) and the pilgrims wait to get the washed water for using as an amulet. Former shrine was built by Bodawpaya but it was burnt down in 1884 so King Thibaw donated the new shrine. The architecture of shrine was mixed with Myanmar and Italian style. There are four stairways for each cardinal point, along these ways many shops are selling religious things, fancy accessories, Myanmar style toys and traditional products. Moreover wooden Buddha status, marble Buddha status and bronze Buddha status are sold. Outside the Mahamuni Buddha Temple the stall of stone carving is situated and they carve not only Buddha status but also other Mahayana Buddhism’s religious status. Therefore the compound is always crowded every day, especially in full moon days because Mahamuni Buddha Image is famous not only in local pilgrims but also for foreigner visitors.
