Palm Juice or Palm Wine

Anyar Myay and its palm trees

The tropical zone of Myanmar is known as Anyar Myay, including the whole low land area ( Mandalay, Sagaing, Monywa, Shwe Bo, Bagan, Kyauk Se, etc). The people in the area are called as ‘Anyar Thu’ for girls and ‘Anyar Thar’ for boys. The whole region is really delightful and famous for their Anyar tradition and culture. The special thing about Anyar Myay is its palm trees. The groves of palm trees are everywhere in Anyar Myay, making the region more pleasant and beautiful. The palm trees are not only beautiful but also very useful. The whole tree can be used for making traditional foods and things- Palm sugar, Palm Wine, Palm snack, the rough broom (made by the Palm leaf stalk),and the roof of houses and tents in some places are made by the Palm leaves. Moreover, the leaves can be used in making mats, hats, baskets. And, the Palmira seed is so sweet and the taste is like jelly (if it is not ripe enough). The roots can also be eaten and can be seen in the local night market.

Nature of Palm Juice or Palm Wine

Among the products of palm trees, the most popular thing is palm juice or palm wine. It comes from the palm sap. There are two kinds of palm tree (male & female ). Both produce palm wine but from different parts. While the female ones produce it from the branch of fruits, the male does from the branch of buds because the male does not fruit. It is very difficult for the climber to climb the palm tree and get it so that some people call it as ‘sky beer.’ And, we can also have two kinds of Palm wine- sweet and bitter. The sap that is initially produced before afternoon or fermentation is sweet and doesn’t make you dizzy. The sap becomes bitter after afternoon and fermentation. One of the Palm tree can produce about 3kg of Palm wine per day. The shops offer the palm tree wine normally in a pot. We drink it, serving with the traditional salads and fried chicken. Most of the people drink fermented Palm Wine (bitter). If you drink it a lot, you feel dizzy so that is one kind of the intoxicant. Many palm wine shops and restaurants are spreading around the low land region, especially in Bagan. Normally, the shop styles are traditional and in the form of tents with the palm leaf roofs. Some shops are well decorated and very beautiful in rural style. Almost all of the things are decorated with the products of the palm trees. There, you can also observe how they produce palm sugar and see the palm tree climbers.

Palm tree climbers

With the usefulness of the palm trees, the small holders and individual farmers extend the palm tree plantation and promote them. Many poems and songs are written about the Anyar Myay and palm tree groves. But the poems about the palm tree climbers are many more and Myanmar state school students are taught about these palm tree climber poems in the text book. Not only the poems but also their real life style looks delightful and pleasant. The palm trees produces sap the most in the spring. So, in the foggy early morning of spring, they go to the palm trees plantation to get the sap. And they collect the sap by pot or bamboo. And, climbing the palm tree is the livelihood for most of Anyar people in rural area. For some people, they have their own palm tree plantation as small holders. But, some has to work as a day-labour for others. Although the life of palm tree climbers seems delightful in other people’s view, it is really hard and tiring. But, they are very honest, hard work and friendly.

So, try to see them and explore their interesting life style. And, taste the authentic palm wine at the rural style shops and feel the nature of the world at the same time. Are you come along with our LM Travel to take “The Low Lands Journey” and taste the Palm Wine? If you say ‘yes’, I am sure you will like it.
